Mount Tabor

copyrighted by Dennis Bratcher and is not available for public use. Mount Tabor is a noticeable landmark of northern Israel. It is located southwest of the Sea of Galilee, rising over 1,900 feet out of the eastern edge of the Plain of Esdraelon. Between Mount Tabor on the North and Mount Gilboa on the south lies the Valley of Jezreel, the eastern outlet of the Plain of Esdraelon to Beth-Shan and the Jordan Valley. Since this plain and the narrow valley of Jezreel are the most level land in northern Israel, they became strategic locations for military operations. Most of the biblical accounts concerning this area describe the battles that occurred in Jezreel and Esdraelon. But the accounts of the Judge Deborah remember Mount Tabor as the rallying point where her commander Barak gathered the forces from the northern tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun before launching a successful attack against the Canaanite Sisera (Judges 4:6-16). |
